Found in the Light of Queer Connection

Sometimes I think about how light moves through a room, how it catches on faces and hands, how it can make a quiet moment feel like a soft invitation. Found in the Light of Queer Connection has me thinking about this—those little glimmers that say, “You’re not alone here.” There’s this memory I keep tucked in my chest, a small thing, but it’s shaped how I move through the world.

It was just after a long meeting, one of those rooms where everyone is talking but nobody’s really saying what they mean. I was tired, a little frayed around the edges, holding myself together with the last thread of patience. When the room cleared out, Mx. Dorian—sharp eyeliner, big laugh—slid a cup of ginger tea beside my hand. No words, just a look that said, “I see you.” Not in a grand way. Just… real, like they were handing me a little piece of rest.

We sat in that leftover quiet, the kind that’s easy between people who get it. I didn’t have to explain the weight I was carrying or why my voice had gone soft. Dorian just let the silence do its work, sipping their own tea, humming something low and familiar. It wasn’t heroic. It was simple, a kind of hush that felt like a hand on my shoulder. I realized, right there, that belonging doesn’t always arrive with a big parade. Sometimes it’s just a cup of ginger tea and someone sitting close enough for you to breathe a little easier.

I think about that small gesture when the world feels too sharp. The way community can be a gentle thing, quiet and steady, holding you without fanfare. In those moments, I remember I’m part of something—woven into a patchwork of people who know how to leave the light on for each other.
